Project Overview
Marathon, Florida
The Weiler Engineering Corporation (WEC) staff are experienced stormwater management system designers, modelers and inspectors. For example, WEC provided design and construction engineering and inspection for the City of Marathon’s stormwater management system. The goal of the project was to provide a complete stormwater system to serve all City right-of-ways where very little had existed prior to the project.
The design of the stormwater system was permitted through the South Florida Water Management and portions through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Curbs and swales were also used in the design to reduce runoff into wetlands and surface waters and direct the flow to the treatment system. Numerous other measures to control pollution were employed including providing oil and debris baffles in all catch basins. This project was a particular challenge due to the predominantly low lying areas of the City of Marathon.
Weiler’s inspection staff was tasked to develop field engineering designs to improve the system’s ability to capture stormwater and reduce or eliminate standing water on roadways and private properties. Weiler’s inspectors were responsible for providing elevation verification of all structures as well as the swales to ensure they functioned as designed. To accomplish this, inspectors commonly shot elevations on the flow line of the swales before and after sod installation to isolate areas needing adjustment prior to final completion.
With the quantity of the stormwater infrastructure involved, it was imperative that construction documents were maintained in impeccable order throughout the project and were easily accessible to the field engineers and City during and after the completion of each phase of the project. WEC also provided as-built drawings of the new system as part of the project.
Relevant tasks include:
- Stormwater modeling and field collection of data
- Public Works project providing flood relief for public and private property
- Reduced run-off into environmentally sensitive water bodies and improved overall water quality
- Utilized various material, such as Geo Tubes, side bank filters and other techniques to improve existing filtration system and reduce construction costs and need for new facilities
