Marathon, Florida
Weiler Engineering Corporation (WEC) was hired to design and engineer Shoreline Protection at Knights Key in Marathon, Florida. The existing site was very low and buffered by mangroves along the shoreline. In an effort to protect the site from flooding and preserve the existing mangrove fringe, WEC designed over 1200 LF of Rip Rap with geotextile soil reinforcement along the upland mangrove limits. This provided a berm separating the upland commercial site from the natural mangrove shoreline. The berm stopped direct discharge of untreated storm water into the sensitive Florida Keys waters. while protecting the mangrove fringe that is critical to the long term survival of the islands. WEC provided CEI for the work to ensure this critical feature was installed properly and with minimal effects on the natural vegetation and waterways of the surrounding area.
