WEC also prepared the necessary design and regulatory applications to re-design the site and facilities to accommodate the expansion, including addition of drainage and utility improvements as well as a complete redesign of the ingress, egress and parking acilities. The project was unique as it was necessary to design a structure that could withstand hurricane force winds and integrate it with a building that was constructed decades before. The design was tested in 2004 when Hurricane Charley thrashed right through Port Charlotte and the Cultural Center with winds of up to 175 miles per hour and left only cosmetic damage to the building while destroying everything else in its path.
